When engaged to create this cantilevered wet-edged pool on a Sydney cliff top, Sunset Pools’ brief was to construct a harmonious extension of this home’s striking minimalist design.
Working with visionary architects and consulting engineers Sunset Pools designed and built this stunning pool and spa that actually extend beyond the cliff edge to create additional leisure space for the property’s lucky owners. |
This swimming pool forms an integral component of the property’s structural design, whilst enhancing the architecture’s aesthetic and physical relationship to the building’s environment.

This spectacular Sunset swimming pool and frameless glass fencing takes full advantage of the outlook from the home’s second level, across the marble coping and pool surround to the home’s uninterrupted ocean views.
This demanding project required innovation at every stage. The plant room that houses the pumps and filtration systems is positioned directly below the spa, with the systems many motorised valves fully integrated into a C-Bus home automation system. The garage and the plant-room’s roof, as well as the patio and home’s living and entertainment levels also comprise part of the swimming pool’s double-formed structure.
Essential to this project’s success was Sunset Pool’s exceptionally narrow and cantilevered balance tank design, enabling the sites limited space to be efficiently optimized and actually extended above and beyond its site’s physical limitations.
The entire structure was double-formed as the pool shell’s exterior served as walls and rooves of adjacent building elements. As a structural component of the building, double galvanised steel reinforcing was mandated and the concrete pool shell and spa was poured and vibrated, along with the patio slab and two levels of the house.
The high-spec pool shell is formed from 40MPA concrete with Xypex waterproofing added, once cured it was internally rendered then coated with a waterproof membrane before the patio and coping were finished in marble, and glass mosaic tiles applied to complete the interior.
As the pool and spa are enjoyed year round, the owners are delighted that the heating and water management systems are completely out of sight. Sunset Pools designed hidden pipes that zigzag through the building’s four levels from the subterranean pump room, to the fully automated rooftop solar heating array.
This impressive cliff-top pool and home’s integrated space has been featured in numerous magazines, where the best of contemporary Sydney living can be seen to make the most of the site’s obvious attributes.
